Latinx: a cultural exchange

By Joe Giddens   Languages change. This was reflected in an evolution of Pima Community College’s annual celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. This year’s event, “A Celebration of Latinx History,” was held at the Downtown Campus on Sept. 26. The event boasted two firsts: It was the first time Pima has used the term “Latinx” for the month and for the first time, the Writing Department was involved in the proceedings, according to Mike Lopez of the Downtown Campus Student Life Office. “Because we're a Hispanic-serving institution, it seems like a particularly important month to highlight at the college,” said Brooke Anderson, organizer and writing faculty member.“(The term ‘Latinx’) is the most inclusive way to represent people from a Latin descent. And so not only does it rep...

Aztecs ousted in first round of playoffs

By KYLE MCDANIEL   Pima’s season ended not in a fashion that they had hoped, losing in their first playoff match. This was the second consecutive year they lost in the first match.   The Aztecs have some key players they will be losing due to the NJCAA rule, allowing for only two years of competition. Keeper Mackenzie Bernal and other sophomores that were key contributors were Kylee Martin, Paola Ruedaflores, Tayler Rinehart, Perla Blanco, Annalisa Verdugo and Mykayla Toth.   Kylee Martin who played midfield was named first team all ACCAC/Region I after she started all 21 games. She also had five goals and one assist.   Oct. 22 at Scottsdale CC 1, PCC 0   The Aztecs season came to a screeching halt on Monday when they lost to the Artichokes in the NJ...

Aztec’s fall out of the top five

By KYLE McDANIEL   So far this season, Pima Community College has won 85 percent of its games for a record of 11-2, which currently has the team ranked No. 6 in the nation.   When you average 3 goals a game and you concede under 1 goal a game, that’s a recipe for success.   Oct. 2 vs. Glendale CC “Canceled”   Sept. 29 at Paradise Valley CC 3, PCC 5   It took the Paradise Valley Pumas a mere 7 minutes to score on the Aztecs, but Pima wasn’t going to roll over that easy. The team put three goals past Paradise before the half.   Then the Pumas made it interesting in the 68th minute by netting a second goal, but the Aztecs scored two more times in the 70th minute to put the game out of reach.   Pima had four different scorers on the day, whic...

Aztec’s struggle to find the back of the net

The Aztecs are 1-2-2 over their last 5 games, giving them a 5-5-3 record for the season so far. Averaging only 1.38 goals a game this season is something Pima Community College needs to fix.   Oct 2. Vs Glendale CC “Cancelled”   Sept. 29 at Paradise Valley CC 4, PCC 0   Paradise Valley the 19th ranked team in the nation was clinical in their finishing, scoring on half their shots. The Aztecs were able to keep pace with the Puma’s throughout the game, but weren’t able to be as proficient in front of goal as Paradise Valley was.   This was the third time Pima has been shutout this season.   Sept. 25 at Chandler-Gilbert CC 0, PCC 0, 2OT   Both goalies were busy in this match as both faced double digit shots, yet were able to each keep a clean sheet....

Letter from the Editor: Star Trek and what we don’t talk about

By JOE GIDDENS The most British man who’s playing a Frenchman is slated to return to “Star Trek.” The trend of the reboot continues onward with Patrick Stewart’s announcement on that he will reprise the role of Jean-Luc Picard made famous on the small screen’s “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and its later film adaptations. Thoughts looking forward and back at his tenure.   Perhaps the passage of time will curb the film’s portrayal of Picard as a tank top-wearing action hero and Picard now being portrayed by a 78-year-old man will return to being a subdued, thoughtful diplomat.   Secondly, one of the hallmarks of the science fiction genre is showing a glimpse into a possible future that is more about the audience’s present time. The original series had episodes that were mo...

Juanito’s es bonito

By HANK ROBICHAUD Taqueria Juanitos is a delicious madre-and-padre Mexican restaurant. There are no chips and guacamole here, but it is the closest thing you will get to eating at a taco stand in Mexico. In Tucson, Juanitos, which is located in a building with a purple exterior on the corner of Grant Road and 15th Avenue, is a great place to unwind and get a filling lunch or dinner made from scratch. In 1986, Juanitos started as a food truck in Van Nuys, California, and grew into a free-standing building in 1987 in the San Fernando Valley. The concept was started by Juanito Sr., once of three generations of Juanitos. In 1996, Juanito Jr. started the Taqueria Juanitos in Tucson. The fast-casual restaurant’s variety of selections will leave y...

At Pima, justice is in Blum

By DANIEL VELASCO Joshua Blum is a Pima Community College Police sergeant and DUI coordinator who’s worked for Pima since 2012. Through his years of service, he’s seen it all, from assaults to stolen laptops. Q: How many police officers work for Pima? (all campuses) “Thirty-one right now. All campuses are staffed by one single police department. Each officer is assigned to campus based on staffing needs of the day.” Q: What are some factors that would require different staffing needs? “Events, or if we see certain crime trends, we’ll stack up officers on that campus. Depends, based on community needs of day.” Q: What made you decide to become a police office for Pima? “I enjoyed working for a smaller agency; it allows me to provide more engagement to the community rather than e...

Aztecs dig in for the long haul

By ARMANDO HARMON   After a tough loss to a juggernaut of a team No. 8 South Mountain, the Aztecs looked to bounce back with a series of non-conference wins.   The Aztecs took a little break from the desert heat and spent a weekend in the city founded by the Germans found in 1904. Like Ron Burgundy of “Anchorman” would say: “The greatest city in the world of San Diago.”   Sept. 28: PCC 3, Grand Canyon University Club 0   The Aztecs earned their 10th win of the season with a good old-fashioned sweep. Pima (10-8) won in straight sets, 25-14, 25-18, 25-22.   Freshman Madi Nash had another match with nine kills, 13 digs and two aces. Ashlee Sappington had seven kills while Jade Romine had six kills, 15 digs and one block. Kaleigh Hockett had 27 assists, and G...

Aztecs devour their veggies

By HANK ROBICHAUD   Pima Community College football team had its home opener on Sept. 29, defeating the No. 4 Scottsdale Artichokes. The Artichokes came into the game with a 4-0 record, while Pima came in 2-1. The Aztecs’ defense played great all night, however, and caused four turnovers. Sophomore Macarius Blount brought in two interceptions, while sophomore Christian Maddoux had one. Leonard Lee had the biggest of them all to change the momentum of the game for the Aztecs. “I try and put in hours of film study a week also what we did was we try to disguise our coverages a lot,” defensive back Lee said. “I ended up dropping to the deep third, saw the seam route coming, and I jumped it.” Pima’s offense couldn’t get it going early in the first half, only scoring the one touch...

Commending the condom

By PARKER BROCK   With STD rates in the United States rising to an all-time high, it’s more important than ever to stay safe in the sex. Pima Community College is not only a great learning environment but a social one as well. Students in more intimate classroom settings are more likely to develop relationships with fellow students, gaining friends and potentially dating partners. Though college-age students are mature enough to make the decision to have sex with consenting peers, the threat of potential exposure to STDs and unplanned pregnancies is often overlooked. Diseases such as gonorrhea and chlamydia have an active presence in the Tucson community. In 2017, BackroundChecks.org ranked Arizona 19th in the nation for STD rates. There were 151 cases of gonorrhea and 511 cases...
