Beaut Burger: Beaut-y and no beast

by ALEXZANDRIA MARTINEZ Beaut Burger, pronounced b-yoo-t, is taken from the Australia/New Zealand slang for “beauty.” It also should stand for “hidden gem for vegans.”  Beaut Burger is located in the Mercado San Agustin Annex, 267 S. Avenida del Convento.  The restaurant itself is an old train shipping container on the West side of the plaza that has been re-purposed. In fact, all of the small locally owned businesses inside the district are all located in re-purposed shipping containers. The plaza is an extension to the Mercado San Agustin District. MSA Annex is open from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily.  The plaza was something I’ve never seen before. When you walk in, you’ll notice flag signs for each business.  Beaut Burger’s dining area offers an outdoor experience while eating, bu...

Aztecs keeps the momentum going

BY ANGEL CANEZ The Pima Community College Baseball team hasn’t let its foot off the pedal in the last month.  The Aztecs’ record is 20-9-1, including a 13-5 record at home during that span. The team has won 9 of its last 13.  Phillip Sikes and Austin Bryan both won ACCAC Player (Sikes) and Pitcher (Bryan) of the Week for April 8-14. Sikes batted .533 during that span with five RBI and five run scored to go along with two stolen bases. Bryan was 2-0 during the week giving up one run in ten innings along with 15 strikouts. April 13 (3-1 Pima) (10-8 Pima)  The Aztecs were hosted by the Yavapai Community College Rough Riders on April 13 in Prescott, where Pima swept the Rough Riders during the doubleheader.  Pima had Bryan on the mound during the first game and he gave up 1 run in the fi...

Some more rap songs

Czarface & Ghostface Killah – “Czarface Meets Ghostface” (Hip-hop) Sci-fi B movie camp is the setting for a Wu-Tang reunion of Inspectah Deck (the most underrated MC of the Wu) and Ghostface Killah (responsible for the Wu’s best solo material). 7L and Esoteric join Mr. Deck to complete the supergroup CZARFACE, adding equally goofy production cues and bars. Any album that opens with “Macho Man” Randy Savage cutting a promo on the group is bound to be quirky, a quality cemented with all the czar-based puns (the World Championship Wrestling Pay-Per-View Starcade becomes “Czarcade,” Harlem becomes “Czarlem,” the producers are called the Czarkeys as a reference to the Marquees, Jesus H. Christ). Thankfully it’s more “Invaders from Mars” than “Zaat” (for those not acquainted with old sci-fi...

Pima CC Softball back to winning ways

By KYLE MCDANIEL The Aztecs’ Softball team is starting to find the winning formula after winning six of the last seven games, with three of those victories coming via the mercy rule.  With this winning streak, the team is up to fifth in the ACCAC standings. April 13t(A) Game 1: Pima Community College 17, Scottsdale Community College 6 F/5 Just like GateWay, Pima seems to have Scottsdale’s number as they swept the season series with them as well. It was also their sixth straight road victory, which could be key toward the end of the season.  The Aztecs scored all 17 runs in the first four innings of work. Sophomore Jessica Lozania had four RBIs in the first two innings, while sophomore Devynn Marshall brought in 2 runs after hitting a bases-loaded single. Lozania, Marshall and freshma...

Two distracted driving bills vie for passage

By KYLE KERSEY There are two competing measures passing through the Arizona legislature aimed at curbing distracted driving on a statewide level. The first is Senate Bill 1165, which would make it illegal to hold a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle. Hands-free voice-based communication would be exempt from the law, but it would ban texting and driving on a state level. It also would ban drivers holding their phones during phone calls. An exception is made for contacting emergency services. The proposal, which passed through the Arizona State Senate by a 20-10 margin, is being pushed through by a bipartisan group of legislators. The bill was supported by all the Democrats in the Senate, while just 7 of the 10 Republican senators voted in favor of its passage. The impetus for th...

A new lane for Pima’s Xavier Dorroh

Photos and story by  MONTY GANTT Xavier Dorroh was born a woman 20 years ago. She grew up with the anatomical and genetic makeup of a woman. The pronouns people used when people referred to Dorroh were “she” and “her.” However, on March 28, Dorroh made the difficult decision to share through social media that they’re transitioning from female to male.  Dorroh was previously known to friends, family and the Pima community as Brianna Pitre, a woman from Tucson who played basketball at Sabino High School, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and most recently Pima Community College.  Every part of that description was always correct for Brianna, except for one thing: She always felt like a he.  “It was always kind of in my mind that I wished I was a boy but I always put those fee...

Unfair feminism?

By ALEXZANDRIA MARTINEZ  June 4 will mark 100 years since the 19th Amendment was passed by Congress, which allowed American women to vote.  In today’s America, we see the women’s rights movement shifting in different directions. “Modern feminists” are not always a middle-aged white woman picketing the White House fence. A feminist is whoever believes in the equality between women and men regardless of race, gender, religion or political beliefs.  It is about advocating for women’s rights, so that all women can be awarded the same privileges and opportunities that men have automatically.     The division between women of color and white women especially the exclusion and demonization of women of color because of white feminism. White feminism disregards marginalized groups of women and ...

Expand your musical horizons

By MONTY GANTT      Music is an essential part of our lives. It’s the soundtrack to our situations, it exposes us to stories from a variety of people and brings people together during unfortunate circumstances.  However, one thing I’ve noticed during my 19 years of life, is that while music brings people together, it also seems very segregated regarding certain genres.  People of different ethnicities claim a music genre as their culture’s own.  We’ve all been guilty of this. I recall back in elementary school the anger I had with a white classmate of mine for reciting lyrics to an Ice Cube song I had heard on the radio. This negative feeling I had toward him stemmed from how I saw other black people treat fans of hip-hop who were not people of color.  Years later, similar feelings we...

Take a moment to look around and breathe

By ERIK MEDINA Being a first-gen college student, the pressure of succeeding and doing something with my future is at an all-time high.  Family members and peers look up to you and expect so much. Of course, this isn’t the case for every first-gen student. Not everyone has the same story.  There comes a time where you begin to succumb to that pressure and doubt yourself. There’s a constant cycle of whether you’re doing the right thing or if this is really what you want to do. I think a number of students can relate to this, though, not just first gens. I will admit that I have fallen under this pressure numerous times. I wasn’t sure if the path I was taking was what I truly wanted to pursue. I changed my major and dabbled in different areas until I realized what I wanted to do. I bega...

Dance Fusion

By COSTA B. PAPPAS Pima Community College’s dance program kicks off their spring dance fusion show on April 26 and 27. With Nolan Kubota as their director, the performance combines contemporary styles with ballet, modern jazz, and other styles. The event will be open to anyone who wishes to come for a cost of $10.   Walking into the dance studio, all the dancers were hard at work. There were dancers in the corner stretching, others on the floor standing a top bottles while a group practiced acrobatic tricks. I was shocked to even find one girl sitting on a bed of nails in a mermaid costume for one of the dances.   All the music for each dance varied. In one room a hip-hop song was playing while a jazz song played in another.   Interviewing Yazmin Campa, 20, she explai...
