Aztecs striving to find victory on the field

March 30th (A) Game 1: PCC 13, Chandler-Gilbert CC 4

 

The Aztecs earned their first ACCAC season sweep, after they swept the Coyotes from Chandler-Gilbert.

 

Heading into the seventh inning Pima was winning 8-4, when they tacked on five more runs to put the game out of reach. A bulk of the offense came from the 1-4 hitters as they scored 10 of the runs on 11 for 18 hitting.

 

Sophomore Devynn Marshall went 5 for 5 at the plate with three RBI singles.

 

Freshman Bianca Castillo got the win after throwing a complete game. She allowed three earned runs on 10 hits while striking out five.

 

Game 2: PCC 14, Chandler-Gilbert CC 0 F/6

 

Pima got their seventh mercy rule victory of the season after pummeling the Coyotes 14-0, with half of the runs coming in the sixth inning.

 

Sophomore Jessica Lozania, freshman Samantha Angulo and sophomore Ariana Gomez hit back to back to back RBI singles after the Aztecs loaded the bases. Gomez finished the game 3 for 5 with two runs scored and three RBI’s.

 

Freshman Abril Nerey threw a three hit complete game shutout, also striking out three.

 

March 23rd (H) Game 1: PCC 3, Paradise Valley CC 12

 

After the sweep from Paradise Valley the Aztecs have now lost seven of the last eight.

 

With Pima losing 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning freshman Kylee Leach hit a three run home run, however the Pumas would score four more runs to put the game out of reach.

 

Bianca Castillo is now 5-7 on the season after she pitched four and 1/3 innings. She allowed five earned runs on nine hits while striking out four.

 

Game 2: PCC 1, Paradise Valley CC 3

 

The offense continues to struggle as the Aztecs managed only one run on seven hits.

 

Abril Nerey took the loss, after pitching all seven innings allowing three earned runs on five hits. She also struck out four.

 

March 21 (A) Game 1: PCC 6, South Mountain CC 7

 

Two days later the Aztecs had to travel back up to Phoenix to face South Mountain, who would end up sweeping Pima.

 

Heading into the seventh innings the Aztecs were losing 6-2 and needed a rally. With no outs they loaded the bases, when sophomore Maria Vanezza-Caldera hit a two run RBI single. Still down two runs and now with two outs up stepped a pair of sophomores in Janice Garcia and Jessica Lozania to hit back to back RBI singles. However the Cougars would steal the game in the bottom half of the seventh after scoring the one run needed to win.

 

Abril Nerey now has a losing record on the season after picking up her fifth loss on the season. She pitched six and 1/3 innings allowing six earned runs on 11 hits.

 

Game 2: PCC 1, South Mountain CC 8

 

The Cougars scored three runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a six run lead, and this time there would be no comeback from the Aztecs.

 

Garcia finished the game 1 for 3 with a solo home run, while sophomore Alese Casper took the loss on the mound. She allowed four earned runs on nine hits in three and 2/3 innings of work.

 

March 19th (A) Game 1: PCC 1, Mesa CC 3

 

The first game in Mesa was a closely contested matchup between the Aztecs and Thunderbirds, which ultimately ended in defeat for Pima after Mesa scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

 

Maria Vanezza Caldera had one of the three Aztecs hits, which was a solo home run to get Pima on the board.

 

Losing her fourth game of the year after pitching all six innings and allowing two earned runs on seven hits was Abril Nerey.

 

Game 2: PCC 8, Mesa CC 0 F/5

 

The second game was a different story, just like their season so far, as Pima found its bats and mercy ruled the Thunderbirds.

 

Devynn Marshall and Caldera both scored after freshman Alizea Durazo-Corday’s double in the first inning. With the bases loaded in the second, Casper got hit by a pitch which was followed by Marshall and Durazo-Corday’s sacrifice flies.

 

Castillo and Casper combined to throw the five inning shutout, however Castillo got the win. They allowed a combined two hits.

 

March 16th (H) Game 1: PCC 0, Yavapai College 11 F/5

 

The Aztecs hosted the 8th ranked team in the country in Yavapai, and in the first game were promptly blown out.

 

However the Roughriders didn’t cease control of the game until the fourth and fifth innings, where they scored all 11 runs.

 

Devynn Marshall went 2 for 2 with a double, accounting for two of Pima’s five hits.

 

Abril Nerey was the losing pitcher for Pima after pitching four and 1/3 innings allowing eight earned runs on seven hits. She also struck out three.

 

Game 2: PCC 3, Yavapai College 4 F/8

 

The Aztecs put up a much better fight in the second game taking the Roughriders to extra innings. Pima was already down 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning when Maria Vanezza Caldera hit a single that scored Casper and Gomez.

 

Bianca Castillo scored to give Pima the lead after Devynn Marshall hit a single. However Yavapai came back tying the game in the sixth and ultimately taking the lead for good in the eighth inning.  

 

The Aztecs stranded 10 runners on base for the game, including the game tying run in the eighth inning, which was on third with no outs.

 

Castillo lost her sixth game of the season after pitching all eight innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits, while striking out three.

 

March 14th (H) Game 1: PCC 8, GateWay CC 0 F/5

 

The Aztecs scored all eight runs in the first three innings of the game, which eventually gave them the mercy rule victory.

 

Devynn Marshall had three RBI’s, even though she went 0 for 3, with two groundouts and one sacrifice fly. Freshman Amaya Turner-Vizcarra and Maria Vanezza Caldera went a combined 3 for 6 with three RBI’s and three runs scored.

 

Alese Casper went 2 for 2 with two runs scored, as well as pitching a complete game shutout. She allowed only two hits while only throwing 55 pitches.

 

Game 2: PCC 20, GateWay CC 6 F/5

 

In only four innings of at bats, the Aztecs peppered the Geckos for 20 runs on 24 hits. Pima had a slender lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, when they exploded for 13 runs to end the game via mercy rule.

 

Sophomore Alizea Durazo-Corday got the party started in the fourth with her second home run of the game, her first coming in the second inning. Bianca Castillo also hit a home run in the second inning, which was a three run blast.

 

Castillo finished the game 2 for 3 with five RBI’s, while Durazo-Corday went 3 for 4 with four RBI’s. Ariana Gomez had four RBI’s on two hits, both coming in that marathon of a fourth inning.

 

Alese Casper earned the victory, pitching five innings allowing no earned runs on five hits and five strikeouts. This was her sixth straight victory on the mound.
