The Aztec men’s golf team closed out their final invitational of the season in the
Chandler-Gilbert Community College Invitational at Queen Creek on April 13-14 and came out
with fourth place. After two hard fought days of competition, the Aztecs shot a total of 570
(285-285) and missed the top three by 10 strokes as Mesa Community College shot a 560
(276-284). Eastern Arizona College out shot Mesa by 5 strokes and took second with a two day total of 555 (277-278) and South Mountain Community College had the best rounds both days finishing with a 532 (265-267) and taking first place. In individuals play, things were little more tightly contested. Day one was full of close competition as the Aztecs had two golfer in tied and in the top 5. Freshmans Samuel Salisbury (Walden Grove High School) and Dylan Mattson (Cienega High School) were tied at 69, three under par, as day two loomed for more intense individuals competition. Salisbury continued solid play into day two shooting a 70, two under par and found himself in three-way tie for seventh place with Jacob Smith (South Mountain CC) and Logan Eatherton(Mesa CC). After a seemingly tough day one 73, only shooting two over par , freshman Cody Goza (Blue Ridge High School) picked it up on day two, shooting a 69 which is two under par, and also found himself locked in a three-way tie for 14th place. Freshman Dylan Mattson struggled in day two after a good first day, shooting a 74 which is a three over par, and was another Aztec in a three-way tie for 17th. The Aztecs will compete in the NJCAA Region I, Division I Championships April 25-29 at the Gold Canyon Golf Resort in Gold Canyon, Az.
