Check out free Pima art exhibit ‘Egress’

By Alex Jimenez Pima Community College will host Egress - an art exhibit with work from three London-based artists.  Admission to the exhibit is free and is being held at the Louis Carlos Bernal Art Exhibit on PCC’s West Campus through Oct. 8. The art displayed is all made on paper and was completed during the COVID lockdown by Alice Browne, Anthony Banks and George Little.  All three of the artists attended the Royal College of Art in London. “Each artist explores abstracted themes about London from ‘Leftovers’ left on tables to the surrounding English environments to imagined ideas about San Sebastian to Orbits,” said gallery director David Andres in the exhibit introduction. “‘Egress’ is but a snapshot of what was produced.” George Little’s art uses restauran...

Pima College Volleyball’s Bright future

Photo courtesy of Pima College Athletics Pima Community College outside hitter Jessica Bright-Schade has accrued over 70 kills and nearly 100 digs. By Nate Martinez Pima’s volleyball team did not have an easy schedule last season, but outside hitter Jessica Bright-Schade and the Aztecs made history by advancing to their first national tournament. Due to COVID, it was difficult to find ACCAC teams that could play regular season games, leaving Pima with a slate of NJCAA Division I competition. Despite the elevated level of competition, the Aztecs, who compete in Division II, were able to secure a spot in the NJCAA tournament in April. The team lost to Grand Rapids Community College in the consolation rounds, but given the circumstances, the run was amazing. This year, th...

‘Princess Mononoke’ is a masterpiece

Story and image by Javier Dosamantes "Princess Mononoke"Directed by: Hayao MiyazakiRating: PG-13Run time: 2 hours, 13 minutesStream on HBO Max with subscription or rent on Amazon Prime for $11.99 Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli's co-founder, has garnered a devoted following worldwide and is widely acclaimed across the anime and cinematic worlds.  I, however, was not part of the Academy Award - winning filmmaker's loyal fan base. Until now. Not because I didn't like his work. I just hadn't seen any of it. I know, I know, it seems like I'm the only film geek who doesn't revere Miyazaki's work. That all changed when I went to a screening of “Princess Mononoke” as part of The Loft Cinema's “Cult Classics” series.  “Princess Mononoke” — written and directed by Miyazaki...

Pima Community College Governing Board member Catherine Ripley By Kyler Van Vliet Catherine Ripley has spent her life traversing the world working as a U.S. diplomat, counter-terrorism strategist, professor and – for a few months – as a bassist. This January, Ripley started her new career as a member of the Pima Community College Board of Governors, representing District 1 in Arizona.  She won the general election last November in 2020 against Ethan Orr with a campaign focused on increasing enrollment through formal partnerships with local High Schools, the JTED Program and the Earn to Learn Programs.   Like most universities and colleges, Pima’s enrollment rate is down.

Pandemic Playbook: Santa Cruz River Park Disc Golf Course

By Kevin Murphy The clean and crisp desert air, the jingle of the chains, the audible yelling and laughter in the distance: this is what playing a round of disc golf at the Santa Cruz River Park Disc Golf Course is like. For those not in the know: disc golf - or frisbee golf - is like the game of golf, except instead of golf balls being shot with a club towards holes in the ground, frisbees are thrown from a concrete tee pad toward above ground baskets installed on the course.  Like regular golf, each basket is still called a hole. It is a game of skill, played solo, in pairs, or in groups, where the true opponents are yourself and the elements. Nestled within Santa Cruz River Park in the El Rio Acres neighborhood near Speedway and I-10, this hidden treasure, established in 1978, is freq...

Career Café: Cover Letters and Coffee

By Kevin Murphy Career Café is a free event available to all Pima Community College students that offers career resources and career advice.  The event started in 2013, and this year is being held virtually due to Covid-19 safety protocols. It will cover subjects like resume review, professional interviewing, cover letter tips, and career resources. Though the event is virtual this year, prizes will still be awarded, and the coffee will be sent to students in the mail. First Year Experience program developer Renee Forsyth oversees the event. “The purpose of Career Café is to teach the students job skills and career navigation,” Forsyth said. “So what we found was that the college was hosting these different career fairs and mock interviews, and the students weren't even ready with that...
