Fraud and loathing in Pima County

The Pima County Courthouse in downtown Tucson. (Michael Barera/Wikimedia Commons License) By JOSHUA BAILEYPima Post Last year, Pima County suffered a loss of nearly $43,000 due to a fraudulent account that used county taxpayers' funds, as per a fiscal report by the state's Auditor General released in March. The report stated the account was created by an employee of a construction company contracted by the county, and the procurement department failed to obtain a tax form to change the account's log-in credentials for an online money transfer service, leading to the loss. The audit report also highlighted issues with the county's verification procedures and recommended measures such as staff training and creating a monitoring system for vendors. The report further revealed t...

Hospitality leadership at Desert Vista plans to reopen catering branch in October

By QUENTIN AGNELLOPima Post It is no secret that the Desert Vista Campus is well known for its Culinary Arts and Hospitality program. However, the recent renovations to the campus’ kitchen and dining area have left the program unable to take orders or host catering events. This is set to change in the Fall, according to Jewel J. Mideau, academic director of hospitality leadership.  Starting Oct. 21, the student-run service will resume catering operations with an extensive breakfast and lunch menu, including brioche french toast, traditional scrambled eggs, barbacoa lunch buffet and a taco bar. Jerome Camacho, 40, and Shelby McFarlane, 29, are full-time chefs in the Culinary Arts program. They said that the catering options will be limited to staff events for now, but th...

Royal pain in the brain: The Royal Ransomware attack and the current state of cyber warfare

By QUENTIN AGNELLOPima Post In our modern age of computer technologies, hacking and malicious software have become commonplace.  Much like bacteria and viruses in real life, humans have developed suitable countermeasures over time. However, how do you quarantine a malicious virus that is being piloted by a person?  That is the question I have asked since the Ransomware attack on the Tucson Unified School District that took place Jan. 30. According to KOLD News 13, TUSD consulted a professional after receiving a ransom letter on printers and copiers district-wide. Based on the style, IT experts were able to determine the source code of the malicious software, Royal Ransomware, which belongs to a group previously known as DEV-0569. Similar to Anonymous, it is a loosely ...

Pima offers students solutions to help in combating stress

PCC Academic Success Counselors Todd Slaney, M.Ed. and Erika Elias M.Ed. offer resources and support to help students find success. (Photos courtesy Pima Community College.) By JENNIFER LANEPima Post Life is full of curveballs.  When students juggle too many balls, they can be hard to catch or even dodge. If you are going to school and work, going to school and raising a family or doing all three at once, your hands may be full.  Pima Community College caters to the non-traditional student and offers resources to help students reach their academic goals. For example, counselors and advisers can work with students who struggle to complete classes needed for their degree or certificate. A counselor can help a student figure out how to organize time spent on what ...
