Aztec Baseball continues hot streak

By ANGEL CANEZ The Aztecs won 10 out of their last 13 games including a six-game win streak and going 7-0 at home during that stretch.  The team improved its record to 26-12 and 12-9 in conference play. The Aztecs had previously dropped four of six the week before.  Freshman JJ Rollon won the ACCAC Division I player of the week for the week of March 25-31, hitting a .476 at the plate. Aztecs Overcome Early Upset to Finish 7th By MONTY GANTT The Pima Community College Men’s Basketball team traveled to Danville, Illinois as the No. 3 team in the country for the NJCAA Men’s Division II National Championship Tournament. Although falling victim to a first round upset, the Aztecs bounced back to win three straight games and finish 7th in the nation. NJCAA Drops the Ball   By MONTY GANTT On March 23, the Pima Community College Women’s Basketball team defeated the Sinclair Community College Tartans 64-57 to finish their season 5th in the final NJCAA rankings. The game was one of the better ones for the Aztecs as it featured aggressive defense, proficient offense and an ideal farwell game for Sophomores who will move on to a different chapter in life. An official representing the NJCAA handed Aztecs Head Coach Todd Holthaus a commemorative souvenir to remember the moment, the basketball used to play that day’s game. It was a nice gesture by the committee to reward the hard working women on a tremendous season and for surviving throughout the week long tournament. Pima sprints ahead in second half of season

The Aztecs seem to be better as the season continuous.   March 30 The track & field team competed at the ACCAC Conference Meet at Mesa Community College on March 29th. As the Aztecs took home four individual conference titles and also tacked on two more national qualifying marks on the day. Katherine Bruno took home two titles one in the 5,000 meter race with a winning time of 18 minutes, 45.12 seconds to also  qualify for nationals, she would go one to win the 1,500 meter race as well with a personal-best time of 4 minutes 51 seconds. By Kyle McDaniel   March 30th (A) Game 1: PCC 13, Chandler-Gilbert CC 4   The Aztecs earned their first ACCAC season sweep, after they swept the Coyotes from Chandler-Gilbert.   Heading into the seventh inning Pima was winning 8-4, when they tacked on five more runs to put the game out of reach. A bulk of the offense came from the 1-4 hitters as they scored 10 of the runs on 11 for 18 hitting.   Sophomore Devynn Marshall went 5 for 5 at the plate with three RBI singles.   Freshman Bianca Castillo got the win after throwing a complete game. The Men and Women’s Golf teams are doing A-OK this season

The Aztecs women’s golf team opens up their first tournament since spring break with a dominating second place finish. Chandler-Gilbert Community College jumped out early and were able to maintain the lead throughout the two matches, but the Aztecs did have their hands full with Mesa Community College. The women were able to sustain a second place from great day one shooting but Mesa wasn’t letting the Aztecs get away without a day two fight. Pima Community College was able to edge out Mesa by 10 strokes to finish off day two 391 to 401 with a two day total of 773. The Aztecs women’s continues their dominant play heading down the home stretch of the season. Championship drive fell at five

By Henry Robichaud   Pima Community College flew east to Arkansas to be apart of the National Championship tournament.   On March 21, one day after falling to Kansas City (KS) Community College in the quarterfinals, the No. 6 seeded Aztecs responded with a 110-90 upset win over No. 2 North Iowa Area Community College. They will play one final game on Saturday in the fifth place match-up.  The Aztecs held the lead for the entire game. Alyssa Perez ended the first quarter scoring a three-pointer to give the Aztecs a 23-15 lead. Pima took their first double digit lead at 38-26 mid-way through the second quarter. During the week her averages were 30 points eight rebounds and five assists. She has been on fire this year leading the ACCAC in scoring averaging a monstrous 24.1 points per game. On Feb. 23, The No. 16 ranked Aztecs defeated the Phoenix College Bears and swept the regular season meetings between the two teams after a 90-79 win. It was their seventh win in the last nine games. The Aztecs beat the Bears 105-95 last month in Phoenix. The Aztecs started the game fast opening on a 19-4 run, and then led 30-13 at the end of the first quarter.   Pima picks up crucial wins with playoffs en route By: Hank Robichaud On Feb. 23, The 13th ranked Aztecs defeated the Phoenix College Bears by the final score of 107-102 to close out their final home game of the season, and winning eight of their final nine games. Down 96-95 with 5:52 left, the Aztecs went on a 9-0 run to take a 104-96 lead with two and half minutes left. The Bears then scored six straight points to make it a one possession game at 104-102.  Sophomore Abram Carrasco missed a three-pointer but grabbed his own offense rebound to give Pima a fresh 30 seconds on the shot clock. New Year, who dis? Aztecs win 10 of 13 so far in 2019

By HANK ROBICHAUD   On Mar. 9 the Aztec women’s team were able to regain the Region 1, Section II title when they overcame the Mesa Community College Thunderbirds 80-58. The Thunderbirds had won the two previous championships.  After a tight first quarter which the Aztecs led 18-16, Haile Gleason set the tone in the second quarter by scoring five straight points forcing Mesa to call timeout. The Aztecs used a 12-3 run to take their first double digit lead at 30-19 forcing the Thunderbirds to call another timeout with 4:13 left in the half. Pima continued with a 10-4 run at the end of the quarter, and led 40-23 at the break after out scoring Mesa 22-7 in the quarter.
