Kametani named ACCAC player of the year

BY KYLE MCDANIEL Sophomore and team captain Hugo Kametani helped the Aztecs this season record their best regular season in team history. He finished the regular season with 22 goals and 5 assists. He also was recently awarded the ACCAC/Region 1 Player of the Year award and was selected first team All-ACCAC/NJCAA Region I. Since he is playing like the world is on fire I felt it would be great to get his story and get to know him. He is from Kashima, Japan which is a coastal city roughly in the middle of the country, and is roughly 57 miles from Tokyo. Last call for Pima football at home

Story by HANK ROBICHAUD Photos by HANK ROBICHAUD, MADYSON HOWARTH and JOE GIDDENS It’s like this every time Pima Community College plays Eastern Arizona College, according to Head coach Jim Monaco’s wife, Dannielle Monaco. She said she fainted when the two teams faced off a couple years ago from how close and exciting that game was. It’s been that kind of week, both on and off the field in the twilight of Pima Football. Monaco was named Pima Community College’s new Acting Athletics Director on Oct. 29. This comes after the Aztecs played the program’s final home game on Oct. 27. They faced off against No. 9 Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters. National recognition for Aztecs’ Gutierrez

By KYLE MCDANIEL Freshman defender Taylor Gutierrez has started every game so far for the Pima Community College Women’s Soccer team, was recently awarded the ACCAC Player of the Week. That week, she scored a goal and assisted a goal in the team’s 3-0 victory over Cochise College. As well as helping keep the #7 team in the nation Phoenix College to a 1-1 draw. One of the best results the Aztecs have had all season. Thanks to those performances, the spotlight was shining on the Aztecs, which helped her get the national recognition. “I think I got it because I’m a defender, and defenders don’t really score and assist goals. Aztecs start second half on right track

BY: ANGEL CANEZ Katherine Bruno outpaced the competition again winning her third 5K in a row. This time across state lines on Oct.12 at the Mt. SAC Community College Invitational in Walnut California, with a time of 18:13.0 seconds. Mary Siml freshmen came in fifth place with a time of 19:22.0 making that back to back top five finishes for her and third meet in a row Pimas had two women runners finish in the top seven. The Men's trip out west wasn't as fruitful, they finished the meet in the middle of the pack finishing in 6th out of 14 teams. Brooks Ringer, the Aztecs’ gunslinger

By Hank Robichaud Brooks Ringer, a 19-year-old freshman quarterback from Orem, Utah, recently had an amazing game against Phoenix College, on Sept. 22 completing 22 of 30 passes and throwing for 457 yards. This performance of Ringer earned him NJCAA Offensive Player of the Week. Ringer moved here this year to be a part of the Aztecs’ football program. A short time (two games) after the move, Brooks was named the starter and he did not look back. “I had a great battle between the two, and that was really hard,” said Glenn Posey, Pima’s offensive coordinator. “In the first game, Maquis started the first quarter and Brooks came in in the second. Aztec’s catching fire at the right time

By KYLE MCDANIEL The #4 Aztecs are on a seven game win streak heading into their clash with the #11 team in the country. During the win streak they have outscored opponents 27 to 4. If they win their final three games it might propel them to 3rd or higher in the nation. To this point in the season Pima have scored 62 goals while only allowing 11. They have had 15 different goal scorers, with four players having at least 5 goals, but the overall leader is sophomore Hugo Kametani with 19. Aztec’s fighting for a playoff berth

The Aztecs will need to use this home field advantage to help secure a spot in the NJCAA Region I, Division I playoffs, because only the top six make it. Pima’s next game is away to the number 9 team in the country Phoenix College. Oct. 13 vs. Mesa CC 0, PCC 1 The Aztecs won their second game in a row thanks to a second half goal from sophomore Tayler Rinehart, who was assisted by freshman Gabriela Molina. As Major League Baseball writes its final chapters of the 2018 season there remains one unknown the World Series champions. That remains undetermined for the moment. Bruno repeats as ACCAC champion

BY ANGEL CANEZ The Pima Community College Men’s and Women's track teams competed in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference, Cross Country Championships on Sept. 26 at the Glen Lake golf course in Glendale Arizona. Katherine Bruno led the way once again coming in first place in the 5K race, for the second year in a row at the ACCAC championship. “Katie's back to back conference championship titles are impressive. She shared the lead with the runner up until the 2 mile mark and then pulled away.” Cross country coach Greg Wenneborg, said. Bruno also set the course record along with a personal best time of 18 minutes and 12 seconds. This makes Bruno 3rd top ten finish in as many races. Displayed in museums around the country, the stars of the past are immortalized and viewed by fans. None are bigger than the National Football League Hall of Fame. Every summer, the Hall of Fame induction ceremony draws a national audience with its annual game to kick off the preseason. It generates millions of dollars in revenue for the museum and more for the NFL. Lately some hall of famers have requested that some of that revenue be put into a hall of fame salary and an insurance for life fund. Although the members of the hall of fame are in the right for requesting something such as insurance for life, should be considered by the multi-billion-dollar company of the NFL....
