Pima volleyball falls in straight sets to Yavapai College

By Raymond Suarez The Pima Community College volleyball team (0-2, 0-2 in ACCAC) played three tightly contest sets on Wednesday in its match against Yavapai College (6-5, 6-1). The Aztecs fell in straight sets to the Roughriders 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 27-25). Pima will hit the road on Friday for an ACCAC match-up at Arizona Western College. First serve is at 7:00 p.m.

During legendary softball runs in high school, college, and in the professional ranks, Rebekah has been blessed to play for three legendary coaches: her father Armando Quiroz, Stacy Iveson and Mike Candrea. She also played on teams with the likes of softball greats Nancy Evans and Jenny Finch. Jason Jacome Has Come Full Circle in Life, On the Diamond

That season Jacome was named Region 1 Player of the Year, with a record of 17-2. He was drafted in the 12th round in the 1991 MLB draft by the New York Mets. Now, 30 years later, he is back where the whole journey started.  Jason was recently hired as an assistant baseball coach for the Aztecs, joining his brother, head coach Ken Jacome in the dugout this season. Jason and his family made the move to Tucson from Madison, Wis. His son Atley Jacome joined the Aztec baseball team this season as well. Aztecs Golfer Victoria Peña Earns Medalist Honors at ACCAC Invitational

By Raymond Suarez The Pima Community College women's golf team competed at the ACCAC Invitational on Wednesday and Thursday at the Apache Creek Golf Club in Apache Junction, AZ. Freshman Victoria Peña (Tucson Magnet HS) finished the tournament in sixth place shooting a two-day score of 181. Peña's finish in the individual standings earned her medalist honors for the tournament. Peña shot a 90 in the final round and finished with a 91 after the first round of play. Winning last year on Mesa’s court when we reached the championship game, it’s the first time a visiting team won that game,” Holthaus said. In what ended up being Pima’s last game of the season, the team pulled off a much coveted victory on the road at Mesa Community College in the 2020 Region I championship game. By Raymond Suarez The Pima Community College men's tennis team opened its 2021 season on Tuesday at the West Campus Aztec Tennis Courts part of the Chapman Auto Sports Complex. The Aztecs (0-1) dropped a close match to Mesa Community College (2-0) 5-4. Sophomore Landon Strickland earned victories in singles and doubles play. Strickland and No. 3 doubles partner Emanuel Robles-Serrano (Desert View HS) defeated Emilio Alvarado and Tate Porter 8-5. Strickland beat Max Beasley at No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-2. This is extremely welcome news to the those teams who have to this point been unable to play any scheduled games due to COVID-19 safety protocols. The women’s volleyball team will play the first game of the season at Eastern Arizona College at 1:00 p.m. on Friday in Thatcher. The women’s basketball team begins its season hosting Arizona Western College at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the West Campus Gym. Photo by Stephanie Van Latum By Raymond Suarez The Pima Community College baseball team (10-4, 5-3 in ACCAC) picked up its first ACCAC conference sweep on Tuesday beating Phoenix College (4-7, 3-5) at the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field part of the Chapman Auto Sports Complex. Freshman Wilson Bannister threw a gem in the first game as the offense scored 20 runs on the day. Freshman Jose Enriquez finished the day 4 for 8 with five RBIs and three doubles while freshman Parker Schmidt went 3 for 5 with four RBIs, three runs scored and three walks. However, freshman Connor Wierman from Ironwood Ridge High School finished in 16th place individually. He posted a score of 76 on the first day and 73 the next. Andrew Rivas, the freshman from Canyon Del Oro High School, finished 24th overall, shooting an impressive par 72 on his first day. He struggled on the second day, shooting an 81 for an overall of 153. Sophomore Jackson Williams, also from Ironwood Ridge, put up a score of 193.  The women’s team had a lackluster day as well. Photo by The Tucson Citizen By Troy Hutchison Before 1970, there were zero black head coaches in D1 college basketball, The first coach to break through was Illinois State's William J. Robinson. In 1972, a man named Fred Snowden took the head coaching job at the University of Arizona, becoming the school's first black coach and the first black coach at a major institution. Back in the 70's, Arizona wasn't a part of the Pac-12; in fact, the conference was known as the Pac-8, and the Wildcats were in a different conference called the Western Athletic Conference, also known as the WAC. Before Snowden's arrival to the desert, Arizona had been in a drought when it came to college basketball. The program had suffered three straight losing seasons and hadn't made the NCAA tournament since 1951....
