The Birds Are Back in Town: Arizona Cardinals Look to Get Back to Winning Ways

By Nate Martinez It's time to bust out your favorite chips n dip and grab that 30 case of beer on sale because football is back.  For many, this feeling is comparable to the feeling of taking your crush on a date for the first time or running downstairs to find Christmas presents; it's just pure innocent excitement! This feeling of excitement doubles if you are an Arizona Cardinals fan. The Bird Gang look to build off an offseason filled with hype and make a run deep into the playoffs. Given the offseason trades, a stellar draft-class, a killer receiving core and a quarterback that has limitless potential, things seem to be looking pretty good for the Cardinals.  Before the Cardinals kick off their season against their longtime rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, let’s recap some of the bi...

Governor Doug Ducey today was joined by leaders representing hospitals, pharmacies, doctors, nurses, public health, universities and more to announce a plan of action to increase influenza vaccination rates and urge Arizonans to get the flu shot. “The overlap of COVID-19 and flu season presents a perfect storm — and we aren’t taking any chances,” said Governor Ducey. “We are approaching this fall with a proactive mindset and plan of action to limit the impact of the flu and preserve hospital resources. I’m grateful to all our partners among health care, businesses, un...

Biden’s Allegations Spark Controversy

Tara Reade (1993) Photo courtesy of wikimedia. By Dalton Grijalva Our presidential candidates have been subject to controversy. Being President in general comes with controversy, just think Benghazi, Iran Contra affair or anything our current president says.    The #MeToo was a movement that came to light in 2017 to hold those accountable for the attrositities of sexual harassment and sexual assault against individuals who have felt that they have been silencenced. The problem we face now is that the left seems to be so overly obsessed with beating Trump they’ll go against their own morals to elect Joe Biden. Whether it be his questionable cognitive skills or his presidential policies. The one that caused #DropoutBiden to trend on Twitter is the subject of his #MeToo controversy. ...

Tucson Businesses with specials and big hearts

Eegees is the perfect cool down for this coming summer (pink passion is the flavor of the month). With our current situation, everything is truly different. Local businesses are especially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, what's truly amazing is when communities come together, and everyone helps each other out. The Aztec Press would like to highlight some businesses offering specials, so you can support your local business without breaking the bank. We are also highlighting those that are giving back to our community.   Mama's Famous Pizza and Heroes is a perfect New York style pizza restaurant. While I highly recommend their family size pizza, their current deal is a family meal deal with a large Neapolitan one-topping pizza, four garlic sticks and two cannoli for $30. ...

Stimulus checks will not be coming for many college students

By ANA FIERROS COVID-19, college administrations and our government have economically duped college students.  After the extreme rise in COVID-19 cases in the United States, universities and colleges across the nation have closed their doors for the remainder of the semester. Students who paid for an entire semester and even went into debt trying to cover the costs of attendance will likely not get a refund for what they paid.  Students have lost work study jobs that they use to help pay for things outside of school. I had to be let go from my work study job because they couldn’t manage to keep me on board with the changing school schedule, though I was lucky enough to be onboarded as a regular employee.  This is not the case for most college students. Ohio University is struggling to fin...

‘The Misadventures of Larry and Lucy Luckless’ – Episode four

The Misadventures of Larry and Lucy Luckless by Arthor Bookes, Editor-in-Chief of the PCC Creative Writing Club   Previously on The Misadventures, Lucy is arrested and tried for her “crimes!” If the corrupt Dewey Donaldson has his way, she’ll be hanging by sunrise. Can Larry rescue her in time to foil the dastardly plot? Read on to find out!   Larry pressed his back up against the wall of the homestead, struggling to be stealthy as he peeked out the front window. Dewey Donaldson Sr.’s thug was reclining against the porch post, his hat tipped down over his eyes and his hand resting lazily on his gun. He had been that way since Sheriff Clark took Lucy.  Larry squinted his eyes. The thug’s breath was long and slow - he might be asleep, Larry thought. He edged his way toward the door...

But now, she’s going to have to face the consequences of defying Dewey Donaldson. Read all about it in - The Misadventures of Larry and Lucy Luckless!   The gritty stone of the jailhouse wall pressed cold against Lucy’s skin. Dimming shafts of sunshine drifted through the small barred window. She looked up, watching the motes of desert dust float back and forth. Sighing, she lowered her head and struggled to think of a way out. *** Earlier that d...

‘The Misadventures of Larry and Lucy Luckless’ – Episode two

by Arthor Bookes, Editor-in-Chief of the PCC Creative Writing Club   Previously, our intrepid heroes, twins Larry and Lucy Luckless, have resolved to search the mine owned by their late pa to find clues to his mysterious death. Once inside, calamity strikes! Larry falls through a sinkhole beneath his pa’s office, and Lucy’s confronted by pa’s former employee, Billy Rascal.   Lucy stood stock-still, eyes locked on the barrel of Billy’s gun. His eyes darted between her and the sinkhole. He motioned with the gun. “Time t’git on outta here, girl.” Lucy cast a silent glance back at the sinkhole. She heard Larry groaning below. I can’t leave him, she thought.  Billy waved the gun. “Go on, Luckless. I’ll drag you, if I hav’ta.”  I’ll be back for you, she whispers to herself. Larry could...

Upholding Democracy in a Crisis

Photo courtesy Michael Stokes, Flickr By Kevin Hartung Whether states are enforcing their shelter-in-place stances or candidates have deferred to the advice of social distancing, canvassing, stump speeches, town halls, debates, primaries and campaigns have taken a hit in this election cycle.  The CDC now recommends that gatherings instead be turned into virtual events. “Events of any size should only be continued if they can be carried out with adherence to guidelines for protecting vulnerable populations, hand hygiene, and social distancing,” the CDC said. “When feasible, organizers could modify events to be virtual.” The president’s Coronavirus Guidelines advised all Americans to avoid groups of more than 10 and urged older people to stay at home altogether in a set of new guidelines. Instructor's take: Casey at the Bat

By JERRY GILL Many years ago, when I was teaching at a college in Florida, I was asked by the graduating seniors to be their commencement speaker.  It was when the Vietnam war was grinding down, President Richard Nixon was being impeached, and the civil rights movement was in full swing. Difficult times indeed. I chose to interpret the famous poem “Casey at the Bat” by E. L. Thayer as a description of the failure of the United States to fulfill its promise to lead the world toward peace and justice. As the poem’s opening line has it: “The outlook wasn’t brilliant for the Mudville nine that day,” the outlook for our country was indeed not brilliant. Although the minor theme of the speech was the failure of the United States to deal effectively with its own problems, as well as those of the ...
