Spirituality could be a chemical within

By DANIEL VELASCO N,N-Dimethyltryptamine, or DMT, is a naturally occurring psychedelic that’s in plants, animals and quite possibly, our brains.  This seemingly mystical and loud chemical has baffled and frustrated scientists for years sparking many theories as to why it exists.  Some claim that it’s the chemical responsible for the dreams we experience at night, or it’s the light we see when dying, or the substance itself is our third eye. Mystical speculations aside, studies on DMT have been shown to offer more questions than answers. Psychological Medicine noted that in a study conducted on 122 recently admitted psychiatric patients and 20 normal subjects, DMT was detected in the urine of 47 percent of those diagnosed by their psychiatrists as schizophrenic.     By DANIEL VELASCO   Pima Community College’s archeology program is one that consists of the best aspects of science.   From working with peers to striving for greatness, Pima’s Archeology Club radiates the best things about the field. With this threat heavily upon us, and finishing up monsoon season -- albeit a fairly dry one -- here’s a guide to some common fungi you might find at whatever cold, dark and damp place you hang out at in Arizona. While mushrooms usually grow in forested areas that receive plenty of rain, Arizona still is home to an array of mushrooms. From Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria) to Valley Fever (Coccidioides), Arizona is home to multiple different mushrooms that yield a wide...

At Pima, justice is in Blum

By DANIEL VELASCO Joshua Blum is a Pima Community College Police sergeant and DUI coordinator who’s worked for Pima since 2012. Through his years of service, he’s seen it all, from assaults to stolen laptops. Q: How many police officers work for Pima? (all campuses) “Thirty-one right now. All campuses are staffed by one single police department. Each officer is assigned to campus based on staffing needs of the day.” Q: What are some factors that would require different staffing needs? “Events, or if we see certain crime trends, we’ll stack up officers on that campus. Depends, based on community needs of day.” Q: What made you decide to become a police office for Pima? “I enjoyed working for a smaller agency; it allows me to provide more engagement to the community rather than e...
