Annual fire and safety report shows safe campuses

By Nora Thompson Pima Community College’s Police Department compiles all of the crime and fire statistics into a an annual booklet. It’s 88 pages long and causes the table that you put it on to kind of shake. Pima faculty are hesitant to let you print it for free. LETTER FROM THE EDITOR- Bring forth your weirdos

By NORA THOMPSON I started taking journalism classes when I was in high school. I decided to forgo the free period at the end of the day that all my friends had and write for the newspaper at Sahuaro High School. I’m glad that I did because I realized that I was passionate about reporting and writing. And it gave the clarity that I needed when I started college to declare a major. In high school, I was a part of an almost entirely female editing squad, and I expected college to be that way as well. I’d heard that women are more likely to pursue writing careers than STEM majors so I expected journalism to be a girls club once more. I was wrong, JRN 101 was evenly split between male and female. News Brief: Future of Community Campus

By NORA THOMPSON At Pima Community College’s Governing Board meeting Nov. 14, the sale of Community Campus, along with the purchase of hotels across the street from the Downtown Campus, will be approved or denied. The Community Campus is located at 401 N. Bonita Ave. In a recent email, Pima officials say it has not sold the campus yet. The Tucson City Council must approve it, because the building is on land that it owns. If Community Campus gets sold, then Pima will be able to occupy the space until July 2019, when Community Campus programs and services will be moved to other campuses. All will be determined at the Nov. 14 governing board meeting.

Network outages and outrage

By NORA THOMPSON Just about everyone was experiencing problems with the computer network recently at Pima Community College West Campus. According to an email that was sent out Oct. 11, the network is back up. Raj Murthy, the Assistant Vice Chancellor to Information Technology at Pima, “A part of a core router started malfunctioning and subsequently failed.” Chris Bonhorst, the director of technical services explains the problem as “The issues impacting the wired network at West Campus have been resolved by modifying some configurations and moving important network routes from one piece of hardware to another. A replacement for the primary router at West Campus was ordered prior to these issues and will be put into service as a part of a larger redesign and hardware refresh strategy...

Debi Chess Mabie running for District 5

BY: NORA THOMPSON and JOE GIDDENS Debbi Chess Mabie came to Tucson 8 years ago, in those 8 years she worked at the Loft Cinema, was the director of the Tucson Pima Arts Council and then received a fellowship from the University of Arizona School of Social and Behavior Sciences. She has a list of other achievements that came before her move to Tucson, “30 years of experience in nonprofit and organizational development.” Mabie said, “but now I'm ready for the Pima Community College, Governing Board.” Mabie found her love of education at a young age. “My father taught at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio. Luis Gonzalez, District 5 candidate

By NORA THOMPSON If elected, Luis Gonzalez will be taking the seat of Luis Gonzalez, who will be retiring this year. No, that’s not a mistake: Both men share the same names. In fact, the two are even friends. Gonzalez said that he was urged to run by the other Luis Gonzalez. “Luis Gonzalez is a friend of mine, and we were talking and he said he would be retiring soon, so it became an opportunity that was available to me,” Gonzalez said.
