Women’s basketball highlights shortened 2020 season

By COREY MCMULLEN The world is in a place that none of us is used to, with the cancellation of all sporting events and types of social gatherings across the globe. This includes the Pima Community College women’s basketball team’s 2020 season. The Aztecs were supposed to play in the NJCAA regional tournament in March. The original plan was for the tournament to just be postponed to the end of April, but with no signs of the COVID-19 pandemic slowing down, the tournament and the Aztecs’ season officially was canceled. With the season being over, the end-of-season honors were announced. Aztec head coach Todd Holthaus was honored with Region I West District Coach of the Year. Walls in need of paint, carpets needing replacement, bathrooms needing repairs, and outdated elevators demand attention. Revitalization of student and faculty enthusiasm compensates for the remodel. If you want to celebrate PCC’s 50 years, maybe start by giving the West Campus buildings a fresh look. PCC is doing a great job enriching its academic infrastructure. By JOSHUA SHAVER From the outside, Hop Street Lounge looks like a smaller bar. But once I walked in, I saw a really big, clean bar. Impressive. There’s a lot of room for people to lounge around, socialize and feel comfortable while drinking a variety of alcoholic beverages. Hop Street opened about six months ago. It has seen an influx of people that are there to play various games and drink craft beers. The very clean bar and new equipment give off a comfortable vibe. I loved the setting and the lighting of the bar, which gives off a smooth and chill environment. The eight TVs that Hop Street features is a bonus for people who want to drink and watch sports. PCC holds Respiratory Care Conference at Downtown Campus

By DRAEDON LEDBETTER The Arizona State Society for Respiratory Care held a conference April 3 in the Amethyst Room on Pima Community College’s Downtown Campus. The event ran from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. “This is one of my proudest moments in my 14 years of affiliation with the respiratory therapy program at Pima Community College,” said Pima Respiratory Care Program Director Jeffrey Miller. Miller has left Pima as of April 5 to be the respiratory therapy manager at Tucson Medical Center. Russell Schmidt is taking over Pima’s respiratory care program. PCC holds space for Team 18029’s weed-killing device

By DRAEDON LEDBETTER Pima Community College has started a partnership with the University of Arizona’s ENGR 498 class. UA Engineering needed more space to work, which meant moving the initiative moved its operation to the Mechatronics lab at the Downtown campus. The capstone project that Team 18029 has been working on is a weed-killing device. The weed-killing device uses a pneumatic punch which pinches and can drill holes to kill to weeds and increase crop production. The device identifies weeds through its manual operation as well as a camera positioned on its surface as of right now the machine is operational. By Kyle McDaniel March 30th (A) Game 1: PCC 13, Chandler-Gilbert CC 4 The Aztecs earned their first ACCAC season sweep, after they swept the Coyotes from Chandler-Gilbert. Heading into the seventh inning Pima was winning 8-4, when they tacked on five more runs to put the game out of reach. A bulk of the offense came from the 1-4 hitters as they scored 10 of the runs on 11 for 18 hitting. Sophomore Devynn Marshall went 5 for 5 at the plate with three RBI singles. Freshman Bianca Castillo got the win after throwing a complete game. She allowed three earned runs on 10 hits while striking out five.
