Pima Volleyball captain garners accolades

By NATE MARTINEZ Pima Post "Defense is a constant battle with the other side. I think it has a lot to do with what a player can do physically, but I believe people overlook the mental aspect.” That is the mindset of Pima Community College sophomore libero Aydalis Felix, a Rincon/University High School graduate, whenever she steps on the volleyball court. Felix was named the ACCAC defensive player of the week for Sept. 13-19. This week, her coaches and peers acknowledged that accomplishment by voting her to be Pima’s Chapman Automotive Aztecs Player of the Week. “It means a lot to be recognized for my defensive accomplishments,” she said. “But it’s more of an honor for my team as a whole. I cannot receive such an honorary award without my team pushing me along and working just a...

Do Not Share Edibles With Your Pets

Photo by Matthew Henry By Alexandria Austin With the legal use of marijuana well under way in Arizona, there is a real concern with who you share your goodies with. With that said, please do not take the advice of the pizza delivery guy on what is safe for your pet! This incident actually happened in California, where one can have their edibles and herb selection delivered right to your door. A young pizza delivery guy had a separate collection specifically for pets.  When you visit the dispensary, there may be an array of pet friendly treats to share with your furry friend as well. The question is, who decided these were safe? Some questions may come up in your enjoyment of newly legalized cannabis. What do I do if my dog ate my joint? Or gummy edible? Or cannabis...

Has Remote Learning Worked?

Photo by Andrew Neel By Raymond Moreno In an article for the Wall Street Journal, reporters Tawnell D. Hobbs and Lee Hawkins make the case that remote learning has not worked for students. Hobbs and Hawkins argue that teachers who never used remote learning are, like their students, new to it and have to adapt their teachings to others for them to have a better understanding of the course.   Valeria Miranda, a 21 year old Interpreter Major, wasn’t really fond of remote learning. She said she doesn’t like remote learning because she feels like she gets less information from Zoom meetings as opposed to traditional in-person class time and needs more “one on one” time. “When it comes to in person learning I learn more because I’m more of a hands on learner,” she said.&...

Catherine Ripley: The Newest Member on PCC’s Board of Governors

Pima Community College Governing Board member Catherine Ripley By Kyler Van Vliet Catherine Ripley has spent her life traversing the world working as a U.S. diplomat, counter-terrorism strategist, professor and – for a few months – as a bassist. This January, Ripley started her new career as a member of the Pima Community College Board of Governors, representing District 1 in Arizona.  She won the general election last November in 2020 against Ethan Orr with a campaign focused on increasing enrollment through formal partnerships with local High Schools, the JTED Program and the Earn to Learn Programs.   Like most universities and colleges, Pima’s enrollment rate is down. According to The National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, college enrollment declined ...

Electric Cars on Campus

A fully electric Dodge Firebird (Kyler Van Vliet) By Kyler Van Vliet On Wednesday, the Tucson Electric Vehicle Association (TEVA) held an electric vehicle car show to bring awareness to Earth Day and a bigger car show being held on Saturday, April 24. The event, held in the parking lot of Pima’s Downtown Campus, had several electric vehicles on display including an electric-converted Pontiac Firebird, a Nissan Leaf, Chevy Bolt and various Tesla Models — all personal vehicles of event volunteers.  One person at the event was TEVA’s public relations and outreach representative Jerry Asher, also known as EV Jerry. EV Jerry was kind enough to give me a hands-on demonstration of what an electric vehicle is all about and gave me a quick ride around in his 2017 Tesla Model X.&nbs...
