Arizona House Passes Bill Allowing Community Colleges to Offer 4-year Degree Programs

By Kevin Murphy On February 22, the Arizona House passed HB2523 by a vote of 57-3, which would allow community colleges to offer 4 year degrees. This is the first time ever that a bill advocating for four-year degrees being offered at community colleges has passed the Arizona House. If passed in the State Senate, the bill would require community colleges interested in offering 4 year degrees to conduct multi-year studies funded by local tax revenues to determine if they would be eligible to hire the required faculty and sustain four-year programs. While other state colleges have backed the bill going forward, Pima Community College has not advocated for or against it. Ballesteros Hits Walk-Off RBI Single as Aztecs Baseball Sweeps Yavapai College

By Raymond Suarez The Pima Community College baseball team (14-6, 9-5 in ACCAC) earned its second straight ACCAC sweep on Saturday as it defeated Yavapai College (12-11, 7-7). Freshman Romeo Ballesteros (Salpointe Catholic HS) provided some clutch hitting going 3 for 6 with three RBIs. Freshman Parker Schmidt finished the day 2 for 8 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomores Angel Ochoa (Canyon del Oro HS) and Terrell Huggins (Cienega HS) did their damage at the plate in the second game. Aztecs men’s golf closes out third tournament at Glendale Invitational

By Raymond Suarez The Pima Community College men's golf team played in its third tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday in the Glendale Invitational at the Corte Bella Golf Club in Sun City, AZ. Sophomore Connor Wierman (Ironwood Ridge HS) had the best two-day total for the Aztecs. He finished tied for 12th in the individual standings after shooting a 151. He shot a 4-over par 76 in the first round and closed out the final round with a 3-over par 75. Freshman Andrew Rivas (Canyon del Oro HS) had a 5-stroke improvement in his second round as he finished with a 79. He closed out the tournament with a two-day score of 163 (84-79). During legendary softball runs in high school, college, and in the professional ranks, Rebekah has been blessed to play for three legendary coaches: her father Armando Quiroz, Stacy Iveson and Mike Candrea. She also played on teams with the likes of softball greats Nancy Evans and Jenny Finch. In 2018, after storybook playing and coaching career, Rebekah was hired as Pima’s head softball coach, replacing her father Armando after he retired. Jason Jacome Has Come Full Circle in Life, On the Diamond

That season Jacome was named Region 1 Player of the Year, with a record of 17-2. He was drafted in the 12th round in the 1991 MLB draft by the New York Mets. Now, 30 years later, he is back where the whole journey started.  Jason was recently hired as an assistant baseball coach for the Aztecs, joining his brother, head coach Ken Jacome in the dugout this season. Jason and his family made the move to Tucson from Madison, Wis. His son Atley Jacome joined the Aztec baseball team this season as well. Aztecs Golfer Victoria Peña Earns Medalist Honors at ACCAC Invitational

By Raymond Suarez The Pima Community College women's golf team competed at the ACCAC Invitational on Wednesday and Thursday at the Apache Creek Golf Club in Apache Junction, AZ. Freshman Victoria Peña (Tucson Magnet HS) finished the tournament in sixth place shooting a two-day score of 181. Peña's finish in the individual standings earned her medalist honors for the tournament. Peña shot a 90 in the final round and finished with a 91 after the first round of play. Winning last year on Mesa’s court when we reached the championship game, it’s the first time a visiting team won that game,” Holthaus said. In what ended up being Pima’s last game of the season, the team pulled off a much coveted victory on the road at Mesa Community College in the 2020 Region I championship game. The Aztecs (0-1) dropped a close match to Mesa Community College (2-0) 5-4. Sophomore Landon Strickland earned victories in singles and doubles play. Strickland and No. 3 doubles partner Emanuel Robles-Serrano (Desert View HS) defeated Emilio Alvarado and Tate Porter 8-5. Strickland beat Max Beasley at No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-2. This is extremely welcome news to the those teams who have to this point been unable to play any scheduled games due to COVID-19 safety protocols. The women’s volleyball team will play the first game of the season at Eastern Arizona College at 1:00 p.m. on Friday in Thatcher. The women’s basketball team begins its season hosting Arizona Western College at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the West Campus Gym.
