By JOE GIDDENS Originally for www.tucsonlocalmedia.com/ This summer while two hurricanes grew in the gulf, the nation’s disease experts planned for another set of storms as the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to overlap with flu season. At an Aug. 31 press conference, Gov. Doug Ducey described this combination as a “perfect storm.” “We aren’t taking any chances,” Ducey said, encouraging Arizonans to get a flu shot to help mitigate the burden on the state’s healthcare system. “More than 4,000 people are hospitalized in Arizona with flu complications and tragically in our state about 700 people die from the flu each year.” The Governor’s Office’s goal is for a flu shot to be available for everyone who wants one, including the 700,000 uninsured Arizonans. Pima College Suicide Prevention Event

By LANISSA PATTERSON September is suicide prevention month and Pima Community College is holding a virtual event to spread awareness. The event will be held virtually over Zoom on Thursday, September 10th from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.. The Zoom code will be provided after a quick registration via this link https://bit.ly/3jvLPAG. When the Aztec Press released Issue 2 on March 12, there was one reported case in Maricopa County. Now, we have surpassed 1500 cases across the entire state, with 32 related deaths. These numbers do not include those with pending tests, nor do they account for those carrying the virus who lack access to testing. Pima County saw its first COVID-19 related death March 23. It was a woman in her 50s who likely had preexisting conditions that increased her susceptibility to the virus. The county had declared an emergency in unincorporated areas on March 19. “It’s here. Pima finishes in fourth at conference championship

By JOSHUA SHAVER The Pima Community College Cross Country Men and Women’s teams ran their hearts out at the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference in Mesa. The women’s team tied for fourth with Glendale Community College with 120 points each. Runner Iriana Sanchez received an All-ACCAC honorable mention after she placed 21st in the 5K race with a time of 21 minutes, 27 seconds. Rainbow Hoss finished just 14 seconds behind Sanchez with a time of 21 minutes, 41 seconds and finished in 24th place. Freshman Janae Quihuis showed her potential by finishing right behind Hoss in 25th place with a time of 21 minutes, 48 seconds. Aztecs striving to find victory on the field

By Kyle McDaniel March 30th (A) Game 1: PCC 13, Chandler-Gilbert CC 4 The Aztecs earned their first ACCAC season sweep, after they swept the Coyotes from Chandler-Gilbert. Heading into the seventh inning Pima was winning 8-4, when they tacked on five more runs to put the game out of reach. A bulk of the offense came from the 1-4 hitters as they scored 10 of the runs on 11 for 18 hitting. Sophomore Devynn Marshall went 5 for 5 at the plate with three RBI singles. Freshman Bianca Castillo got the win after throwing a complete game. She allowed three earned runs on 10 hits while striking out five. March 9th (A) Game 1: PCC 0, Phoenix College 7 On a four game winning streak the Aztecs headed out on the road to take on the number three team in the nation. By KYLE McDANIEL The world of sports card collecting is an ever-shrinking market, as more and more children have less interest in them. Matt Mortenson from Mountain View Sports, a sports collectible shop at Speedway Boulevard and Wilmot Road spoke about his thoughts on card collecting today. “The biggest factor I think is kids have phones, iPads and so many other avenues besides cards, so it’s not as cool as it was when I was a kid,” he said. With the increased awareness about how some sports will leave you with health issues later on in life, parents are enrolling their children in other activities. The Aztecs lack dominance on the mound

By KYLE McDANIEL After 11 seasons at the helm, Armando Quiroz called it quits as Pima Community College’s Softball coach. Rebekah Quiroz, who had been an associate head coach since 2013, was promoted to head coach. Quiroz, a former player at Pima, knows what it’ll take to get the Aztecs back on top of junior college softball. What has helped ease the transition is the eight returning players, including sophomore pitcher Alese Casper, who will have to step up this year as she takes over for last season’s ace Paige Adair. Sophomore Mya Cabral was named Pre-season NJCAA All-American after making the All-American team at the end of last season, which could help boost the team morale.
