Aztecs hit rough patch drop 4-6

By ANGEL CANEZ   The Pima Community College Aztecs are a quarter into the season with a record of 16-9-1. Brian Romero Pima’s freshmen first baseman won the ACCAC Division I Player of the Week for February 18-24. This marked the second consecutive week an Aztec player has won the ACCAC Division I Player of the Week award as Philp Skies took it home for the week of February 11-17 .  This also marked the third Aztec player to win an award this season as Pitcher Astin Bryan won ACCAC Division I pitcher of the Week for the week of February 11-17 as well. Four more qualifying marks by the fourth track meet.

By ANGEL CANEZ   The Pima Community College Aztecs track and field team is getting some time to rest up before the NJCAA Indoor National Championships. As they had only one meet in the last week. The Aztecs hosted the Jim Mielke Indoor Invitational at Pimas West Campus on Feb.16. Freshmans Raelynn Fair and Mary Simi both took first in their respective events. Fair leaped into first in the long jump with a distance of 18 feet 3 inches, improving her national qualifying mark. Fair is currently ranked ninth in the nation in the women's long jump event. Simi took first place in the 1000 meter race crossing the finish line at 3 minutes 10 seconds. Simi improved her qualifying time by almost 2 seconds since her last event. By ANGEL CANEZ Feb.26 The Aztecs hosted the Phoenix College Bears in a double header. Pima would sweep the Bears 12-2 in game one and 4-1 in game two. Details not available at time of print.   The Pima Community College Aztecs continued the strong start to their season. Being led by the sophomore combo of Philp Skies and Austin Bryan. Both players took home Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Players of the Week honors. Austin Bryan the Sahuarita southpaw went 3-0 in four starts racking up 32 strikeouts over 22 innings. While Skies batted .333 over eight games adding one homer, to go along with eight RBI and 11 runs scored, Skies also tacks on two saves. Game 1 and 2 of the Coyote Classic vs. tournament host Col- lege of Southern Nevada (Feb. 8)The Aztecs played two double headers in Henderson, Nevada, on Feb. 8 and 9. The first game of each serieshad seven innings, and the secondgame had nine. The first twogames of the Classic didn’t favor the Aztecs. They got swept away as they had trouble scoring any runs against the Coyotes. After scoring 4 hits and scoring one unearned run, which meantlosing 5-1 in the first game. Pima off to speedy start to begin season

BY ANGEL CANEZ The Pima Community College track and field team continued its strong start to the season as they had four run- ners set national qualifying times again during their fourth meet of the season at the Mesa indoor invitational. The Aztecs were led by Monte Albert as he took firstplace in the triple jump with a distance of 45 feet, 2.50 inches. The men’s 4 x 400 relay team of sophomores Erik Thompson, Duan Grant, Dehawn Gill and Robert Williams took fourth place with a qualifying time of 3.21.83. Freshman Mary Simi and sophomores Anahiamar Lopez and Katherine Bruno all set a national qualifying time for the women. Simi finished insecond place in the 1,000-meter race with a time of 3.12.07, and Bruno took third in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 11 minutes, .0188 seconds. ...

Back-to-Back canceled games wake up bats

By Kyle McDaniel   The scheduled game at Paradise Valley Community College on Feb. 21 was cancelled and will be made up on Feb. 28 in Phoenix, the first pitch is 1 p.m.   The scheduled game vs GateWay CC on Feb. 23 was also cancelled and the date of the make up game will be announced later.   Feb. 26 (H): Game 1: PCC 14, Scottsdale CC 1 F/5   It looks like the back to back cancellations woke the Aztecs bats up, as they scored a combined 14 runs in the first three innings.   Multiple players played a key role in the demolition of the Artichokes, but the main architects were sophomore Maria Vanezza Caldera and freshman Hope Adams. The search is over: Pima names new acting AD

By ANGEL CANEZ         Pima Community College has come to a decision and the search for a new acting athletic director is over. Soon to be former football coach Jim Monaco was awarded the job on Oct. 29. “Jim was appointed and will be in this role ... through the balance of the academic year,” Pima Chancellor Lee Lambert said during the Oct. 30 press conference at the West Campus. Monaco beat out four other candidates -- Pima soccer coach David Cosgrove; women’s basketball coach Todd Holthaus; Akira Kondo, Pima’s athletic trainer; and David Donderwicz, fiscal advanced analysis -- financial aid at Pima’s District Office. Season Ends at regional finals for Pima Volleyball

By ANGEL CANEZ A lot was on the line Nov. 3 for the Pima Community College Volleyball team.  The Aztecs had their season and a trip to Nationals in West Virginia in their grasp. They were only a win away, but their season’s biggest foe stood in their path.   The Aztecs found themselves in a rematch with the tournament’s opening match against South Mountain Community College. The Cougars came out and showed why they were the No. 1 seed, beating the Aztecs in three straight sets 25-22, 25-16, 25-19. That effectively put an end to the Aztecs’ season, who finished the season 16-15. “I am very happy and excited for our players to end the season they way we did this year,” said coach Dan Bithell. “We absolutely played our best volleyball in the Region Tournament, and that was one of our big ...

Story and photos By ANGEL CANEZ The Pima Community College Women’s basketball team kept the ball rolling as the Aztecs defended their home court and improved to 2-0 in a 30-point blowout versus Arizona Christian University (108-78).   The  Aztecs started off great right from the start and opened the game on a 10-2 run.  The Aztecs put in a team effort as they had six players score in double digits. Aztecs bulldoze opponent, get first win

Story and photos By ANGEL CANEZ The Pima Community College Aztecs started the season steamrolled over Arizona Christian University on Nov. 9 at their home opener on the West Campus.  This put the team in a dominant position to start its six-game homestand. The team’s performance showed why it’s the No. 1 team in the nation, blowing out the Firestorm by 44 points with a final score of 120-76.   Pima started the game a little slow before reining it in and went on to hang up 50 points in the first half.  The Aztecs got everyone involved in the season opener, racking up 29 assists.  It seemed as if the team could do no wrong.
