‘AP’-style basketball at Pima

Story by COREY MCMULLEN Photos by JOE GIDDENS For most teams, losing a leading scorer is a setback.      With Pima’s all-time scoring leader Jacqulynn Nakai gone, the Aztecs were without a point guard unless you asked head coach Todd Holthaus, who knew he had someone ready to take over. That person is Aztecs’ point guard Alyssa “AP” Perez. Perez, entering her sophomore season for the Aztecs, has been the leader the Aztecs needed for this year’s young squad, which is returning only four players from last year’s No. 5-ranked team. Perez started playing basketball in the seventh grade. She wanted to try it out because her dad played in high school and they would go play at the park. Perez, an only child, was born and raised in Tucson. In her free time, Perez and her family love to go to...

NJCAA addresses gender inequality in awards

By MONTY GANTT On April 5, Pima Community College Women’s basketball coach Todd Holthaus sent a mass email to various members of the NJCAA. The email raised a question that was on the minds of coach Holthaus and his players: Why were they simply gifted a game ball for fifth place while the men’s team were gifted with medals and a plaque for seventh place in their respective tournament? Rod Lovett, Director of Championships for the NJCAA, responded with a further explanation as to why the women’s teams below third place received essentially nothing. “The awards provided at the Men's Tournament were purchased by the host school.” Lovette said in an email to coach Holthaus. The host school for the men’s tournament was Danville Area Community College in Danville, Illinois. The hosts fo...

A new lane for Pima’s Xavier Dorroh

Photos and story by  MONTY GANTT Xavier Dorroh was born a woman 20 years ago. She grew up with the anatomical and genetic makeup of a woman. The pronouns people used when people referred to Dorroh were “she” and “her.” However, on March 28, Dorroh made the difficult decision to share through social media that they’re transitioning from female to male.  Dorroh was previously known to friends, family and the Pima community as Brianna Pitre, a woman from Tucson who played basketball at Sabino High School, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and most recently Pima Community College.  Every part of that description was always correct for Brianna, except for one thing: She always felt like a he.  “It was always kind of in my mind that I wished I was a boy but I always put those fee...

NJCAA Drops the Ball

NJCAA Drops the Ball   By MONTY GANTT On March 23, the Pima Community College Women’s Basketball team defeated the Sinclair Community College Tartans 64-57 to finish their season 5th in the final NJCAA rankings. The game was one of the better ones for the Aztecs as it featured aggressive defense, proficient offense and an ideal farwell game for Sophomores who will move on to a different chapter in life. An official representing the NJCAA handed Aztecs Head Coach Todd Holthaus a commemorative souvenir to remember the moment, the basketball used to play that day’s game. It was a nice gesture by the committee to reward the hard working women on a tremendous season and for surviving throughout the week long tournament. Then, as the Aztecs were treated to a celebratory meal by coach Holth...
